acts 2:14-41

REVIEW

Recall last week that at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and they began to praise God in different languages - some of the visitors in Jerusalem understood these praises and 2 conclusions were drawn:

1. some asked ,”what does this mean”?

- positive

2. some said, “these men are full of new wine”.

- negative.

either way, the disciples lifestyle was causing a noticeable aroma to all those around (2 Cor. 2:16) - and that’s part of the equation. The Christian’s prayer, visible love, and visible holiness cause curiosity, and, as we will see tonight, God’s word

and the Holy Spirit does the rest.

THE TEXT

v14 - connect

observation 1 - connecting with the listener is huge - this could be through an ideal witnessing situation (aka open door), or just a normal conversation (James 1:19) with a new friend or ongoing friendship.

v15 - connect and correct

observation 1 - you have to know the truth to be able to correct a misunderstanding or lie - must be done with tact and in love !

Ephesians 4:15 - “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ…”

v16 - connect and proclaim

v17-v21 = Joel’s prophecy in Joel 2:28-32

observation 1 - if applicable, use the scriptures as a connecting point as often as possible - always use the scriptures in terms of the gospel.

observation 2 - this is likely one aspect of all that Jesus opened their minds to concerning Himself in the OT - see Luke 24:44-45

”Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures…”

observation 3 - since the incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension had all taken place - the “last days” season had begun - partially fulfilled at pentecost, completely fulfilled at the 2nd coming.

v22 - connect people to the gospel of Jesus Christ!

observation 1 - Since many of the people would have known or even seen the miracles of Jesus, Peter connects them to Jesus. Sometimes it’s good to show people what they might already know about God as opposed to don’t know about Him.

v23 - God’s plan for salvation and redemption began way back in Gen. 3 and culminated in Acts 1.

v24 - since sin leads to death and Jesus did not sin, He could not stay dead!

v25-28 - David’s prophecy in

Ps. 16:8-11

observation 1 - this verifies that Jesus could not stay dead in His sinless state

observation 2 - v28 is particularly beautiful!

v29 - “brothers” - still connected to his audience

v30-35 - he explains Ps. 16:8-11 to them

observation 1 - this whole resurrection thing would have been news to the people - great news!

a. The concept of a literal resurrection apart from judgment day was foreign to Jews…and the early church was Jewish.

b. Despite regularly citing the Hebrew Scriptures elsewhere as being fulfilled in numerous aspects of Jesus’ life and death, they do nothing of the kind in the resurrection narratives, so one can hardly accusing them of inventing stories based on earlier prophecies.

c. see Job 19:26; Ps 16:10; 49:15; Isa 26:19; Da 12:2 -> all are in context of a future judgment - so the people would have been unaware of what happened after death - the rez was a revolutionary event.

v36 - No sugarcoating here - Peter clearly shows the need for a Savior - all of our sins crucified Jesus - we are all guilty.

v37 - He presented the truth and the Holy Spirit did the rest - he doesn’t even give an “altar call”!

observation 1 - only the Holy Spirit can convict someone of their sin - no person can and it is not according to our timing.

observation 2 - they are prompted to action - what must we “do”?

v38 - Peter’s answer - Repent.

observation 1 - both J the B and Jesus started their respective ministries with this command.

observation 2 - the essence of the word is seen throughout the OT and NT - Job, Balaam, Ahab, David, Asa, Hezekiah, etc. - it means to turn away from the world and turn towards Jesus.

observation 3 - although not necessary for salvation, baptism, was to show their repentance symbolically.

observation 4 - repentance leads to the gift of the Holy Spirit

v39 - the scope of the gospel

v40 - the exhortation continues

v41 - the reception of the gospel

applications -

1. connect with people

2. connect with and correct people in love

3. connect people with the gospel

4. be repentant, share repentance, and stay repentant

new blog site

As many of you know, the SN group is now Friday Night Church - our new blog site is fridaynightchurch.wordpress.com and the actual website (www.fridaynightchurch.net) is in progress - thanks!

Friday Night Church - Acts 1:1-4

FNC 1/14/11 study

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS

acts 1:1-4

THE BACKGROUND

a. Author = Luke (no one normal disputes this)

b. Simple break down =

2 sections (1-12 = Peter) and (13-28 = Paul)

c. Complex Break down =

part 1 = Peter and John in Jerusalem around the Jews

part 2 = Phillip and Stephen in Jerusalem/Samaria/Judea around Jews, Samaritans, and an Ethiopian

c. Complex Break down (con’t) =

part 3 = Peter and Paul in Damascus, Judea, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Asia around Jews, curious Gentiles, and pagans

part 4 = Traveling Paul in Europe/Asia Minor around Gentiles and Jews

c. Complex Break down (con’t) -

part 5 - Prisoner Paul in Jerusalem, Caesarea, and Rome around Gentile rulers, Gentiles, and Jews

d. fun facts about Acts -

1. Historically accurate - A. N. Sherwin-White, Professor of ancient history at Oxford University, strongly affirmed the accuracy of Luke’s background knowledge in the 1960s. “The historical frame work is exact.

In terms of time and place the details are precise and correct. One walks the streets and marketplaces, the theatres and assemblies of first-century Ephesus or Thessalonica, Corinth or Philippi, with the author of Acts. The great men of the cities, the magistrates, the mob and the mob leader are all there…

It is similar with the narrative of Paul’s judicial experiences before the tribunals of Gallio, Felix and Festus. As documents these narratives belong to the same historical series as the record of provincial and imperial trials in epigraphical and literary sources of the first and early second centuries AD….

For Acts the confirmation of historicity is overwhelming…. Any attempt to reject its basic historicity even in matters of detail must now appear absurd. Roman historians have long taken it for granted.”

2. It’s a sequel to Luke and a prequel to the Epistles - neither would be really complete in terms of flow with out it.

3. The book of Acts completely fulfills Jesus’ reference to His death in

John 12:24 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

4. Acts might have been a legal document of sorts that Paul could’ve used when he was on trial. Luke wanted to show Rome that Christianity was:

a. harmless (some Romans officials had embraced it themselves)

b. innocent (Roman judges could find no basis for prosecution)

c. lawful (as the true fulfillment of Judaism, an approved religion in the Roman Empire). (Guzik)

5. It marks the ending point to the incarnation (the ascension) and the beginning point of the work of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)

THE TEXT

v1a - Theophilus = dear to God, friend of God; called “most excellent” in Luke 1:3, so he could’ve been royalty of some sort

a. Luke took considerable amounts of time to present a clear picture of the gospel to this man. Sharing and living the gospel is the best thing the church can do for humanity - how can u do this personally?

b. Jesus is more concerned with the “contents” than the “label” - having a name like “friend of God” might look nice on paper, but being a friend of God is far more important and valuable.

v1b -

Jesus did -> orthopraxy (right living/practice)

Jesus taught -> orthodoxy (right doctrine/teaching)

v2a - taken up = ascension

a. alluded to in:

1. John 6:62 - What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?

2. see also - Acts 2:33-34; 3:21; Eph. 4:8-10

b. important because:

1. John 14:2 - He goes to prepare a place for the “church” in heaven

2. Heb. 10:11-14 - It shows the finality of Christ’s offering - He sat down.

3. Rom. 8:34 - It gives Him a specific place of intercession for us -

“Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us”.

4. 1 Cor. 15:24-26 - It gives Him a future place of departure -

“Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.”

v2b - what “commandments”?

1. Matt. 28:18-20 - (be a missional disciple maker)

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to

observe all things that I have commanded you. And lo I am with you always even to the end of this age.”

2. Luke 24:49 - (be empowered)

Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you, but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high

commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

3. Mark 16:15 (be evangelical/equipped) - Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

4. John 21:15 (be in love with Jesus) - “Feed My lambs”

John 21:16 - “Tend My sheep”

John 21:17 - “Feed My sheep”

John 21:19 - “Follow Me”

v3a - what “infallible proofs”?

1. His appearances to Mary, the apostles and Thomas, Peter at Galilee, James, and in 1 Cor. 15:6 - Jesus was seen by over five hundred brethren at one time.

“After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.”

v3b - what things about the “kingdom”? See v2b

v4 - It’s cool how Jesus loved to be with the 12 - here He was “assembled” (synalizo = to meet with) with them.

v4 - Jesus’ command (referenced from John 14:16) was emphatic - they were not to set out and do anything until they received the Holy Spirit. But hadn’t they already in John 20:22? Yes and no.

Yes - they were “sealed and saved” = good;

and

No - they were not yet “empowered” = better.

Next week, we take and in depth look at the Holy Spirit. For now, just realize that Jesus wanted them to be as close to Him as possible before they sought out to do anything great or small for Him.

REVIEW

1. Jesus “did and taught”. A real relationship with Jesus produces real thought, real words, and real action.

2. Jesus’ commandments prior to His ascension were all relationship based - with Him, with other people.

3. Jesus continues to do and

teach to this day - be involved with Him and His kingdom!

APPLICATION

So, as you consider the words, actions, and commands of Jesus just prior to His ascension -

1. What areas encourage you?

2. What areas could you improve?

3. What is the Holy Spirit stirring in you?

SN - notes from 12/18/10

LOVE - TRUTH

AWARENESS - ACTION

a 4 part SN study

action (spliced with a little bit of Christmas)

We have been looking at a four pronged concept of the gospel and how we should love it - lovingly, truthfully, and with much awareness. Tonight we look at action -

To me, the best all time example of action was that of the incarnation - God stepped into time and did something about the fact that we were not able to have a relationship with Him - He came, lived, died, and rose again - tonight, we focus on His 1st gospel action.

A. CHRISTMAS 1 AD

GOD’S ACTION OF THE INCARNATION, PROMPTED SPECIFIC ACTIONS IN ALL INVOLVED - IT SHOULD STILL WORK THE SAME WAY.

LUKE 1

1) Gabriel (Lk 1:26) - the angelic herald of God

From Gabriel, we learn obedience

2) Joseph (Mt. 1:19) - the just, descendant of David

From Joseph, we learn mercy

3) Mary (Lk 1:27) - the poor, pregnant teenager whose reputation will be ruined

From Mary, we learn faith

4) The angels (Lk 2:13) - rejoicing in the sky

From the angels, we learn praise

5) The shepherds (Lk 2:17- 20) - watching from the earth

From the shepherds, we learn responsiveness - they heard, and they acted “with haste”

6) Simeon (Lk. 2:25) - The old man waiting for the Consolation of Israel and whose last ”wish” was just to see Jesus

consolation = paraklases = to call near, to summon

From Simeon, we learn the one key purpose of the incarnation - to call us near to Him (relationship)

7) Anna (Lk 2:36) - the old prophetess ministering in the temple night and day with fasting and prayers

From Anna, we learn another key purpose for the Incarnation - redemption (so relationship is possible)

B. CHRISTMAS 2010 AD

With all 7 scenarios, we see that the birth of Jesus prompted ACTION of some sort. We respond to His actions of creation, incarnation, redemption, and glorification by our own actions as well -

talk is cheap in Christendom.

action 1 - we believe (that He is)

Jhn 6:29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

action 2 - we repent

Mark 1:14-15 - Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent…

action 3 - we believe in the gospel (in the fact that He alone can redeem us)

Mark 1:15b - “… and believe in the gospel.”

action 4 - we love God and walk with Him.

Mar 12:29-30 - Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

And you shall love the LORD

your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.

Mic 6:8 - He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

action 5 - we love people and walk with them.

Mark 12:31 - “…And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

1 John 3:18 - Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed (actions) and in truth.

C. APPLICATIONS

Application 1 - respond to God’s action of sending Jesus with your own specific actions.

Jam 2:22 - “You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.”

Application 2 - This Christmas, let’s be less focused on whose not saying “Merry Christmas” vs “Happy Holidays”, and lets be more focused on loving and sharing the gospel with those who don’t know Jesus.

SN - notes from 12/4/10

LOVE - TRUTH

AWARENESS - ACTION

a 4 part SN study

awareness

Like love and truth, the awareness process began with God through : creation, revelation, invitation, incarnation, and explanation.

A. creation -

Through creation, we become aware that God is omnipotent, original, creative, ingenious, social, loving, and eternal.

Bismarck, speaking with Andrew White, our ambassador to Germany, said of immortality: “I do not doubt it, even for a moment. This life is too sad, too incomplete, to satisfy our highest aspirations and desires. It is meant to be a struggle to ennoble us. Can the struggle be in vain? I think not. Final perfection, I believe in, a perfection which God has in store for us.”

—C. E. Macartney

B. revelation -

God used prophets, visions, and/or angels throughout history to bring awareness to coming calamity (Noah, Joseph, Daniel, Jonah, Jeremiah); the need for perseverance through dark times

(Elijah and Elisha), and the coming Messiah (numerous prophets, Gabriel, and J the B), etc.

C. invitation

The ministry of the Holy Spirit brings awareness to sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 15:5-7)

D. incarnation

The birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus generated and generates much awareness to so many things:

Through His life we become aware that God is:

1. OMNIPOTENT

Matthew 28:18 - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth

2. TRUTH

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

3. LOVE

Romans 8:35-37 KJV - Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

4. SELF-EXISTENT

John 5:26 - For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

5. IMMUTABLE

Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

6. OMNISCIENCE

John 21:17 - He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee…

7. ETERNAL

Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

8. GOOD

John 10:11 - I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

9. GRACIOUS

2 Corinthians 8:9 - For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

John 1:17 - For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ

10. HOLY

Hebrews 7:26 - For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

11. PATIENT

1 Timothy 1:16 - Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

12. JUST

2 Timothy 4:8 - Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

13. SINLESS

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

14. FAITHFUL

Revelation 19:11 - And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Through His teaching we see that God is:

1. Concerned with bringing awareness to the true purpose of His incarnation.

2. Concerned with bringing awareness to false teaching

3. Concerned with bringing awareness to overlooked people groups (women, children, widows, the hungry, the sinful, the poor)

4. Concerned with bringing awareness to the Kingdom of God (while we wait for it, what we do for it).

5. Concerned with bringing awareness to the enemy

E. explanation

Through the life of Jesus (the 4 gospels) and the apostle’s writings (along with Luke and Mark), we gain more awareness in terms of:

1. recognizing false teaching

Luk 11:44 - “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”

2. eschatology (and holiness)

Luke 12:46 - “the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

3. missional living and evangelism

1 Cor. 15:54 - Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.

4. spiritual maturity

Rom. 13:11 - And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

5. Communion

1 Cor. 11:28 - But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup

6. eternal security

Rom 11:2-4 - God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying”LORD, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek

my life”?

But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

7. church discipline

1Cr 5:6 - Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

8. sanctification

2Cr 13:5 - Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

9. perseverance

1Cr 9:24 - Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.

10. orthoproxy -

2Cr 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

11. social justice

James 1:27 - Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that our awareness is in proportion to our relationship with Jesus - He initiates, we respond by through awareness and action (12/18/10 study)!!!

SN - notes from 11/27/10

As always, you can get this podcast on itunes (:thesngroup) and watch live SN videos on calvarychapelcostamesa.com under media/video - this is part 2 of a 4 part series called:

LOVE - TRUTH

AWARENESS - ACTION

truth

Ps. 108:4 - For Your mercy is great above the heavens,

And Your truth reaches to the clouds.

I. What is it?

common definitions

truth – noun

1. the true or actual state of a matter

2. conformity with fact or reality

3. a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like: mathematical truths.

biblical definitions (OT)

1. (from an intellectual perspective) facts which may be ascertained to be true or false (Dt. 17:4; 1 Ki. 10:6)

Dt. 17:4 - …and it is told you, and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination has been committed in Israel, then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has committed…

2. (from a moral perspective) - truth as the attribute of a person. Joseph’s brothers are detained in prison ‘that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you’ (Gn. 42:16)

the 2nd definition was more common in terms of application and usage in the OT.

biblical definitions (NT)

In the NT, the words for truth (alētheia, alēthēs, alēthinos) do not have the same personal and moral connotation. Rather, truth is almost purely intellectual. It is ‘the full or real state of affairs

As in judicial language the alētheia is the actual state of affairs to be maintained against different statements, so historians use it to denote real events as distinct from myths, and philosophers to indicate real being in the absolute sense’ (R. Bultmann, TDNT 1, pp. 238).

II. Why is it important?

A. b/c (like love) God refers to Himself and is described as the “Truth”.

1. Dt. 32:4 - He is the Rock, His work is perfect;

For all His ways are justice,

a God of truth and without injustice;

Righteous and upright is He.

2. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

3. John 15:26 - “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

B. b/c (like love) truth came from Jesus

1. John 1:14 - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

2. John 1:17 - For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

3. Mar 12:32 - So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.

4. Luke 20:21 - Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

C. b/c truth is required from us in our response to God.

1. Jhn 8:32 - “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

2. 2 Th 2:10 - … and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

3. 1Ti 2:4 - Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

4. 2Ti 2:25 - …in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

5. John 4:24 - “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

D. b/c truth is required in our response to people

1. 2Jo 1:4 - I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father.

2. 3Jo 1:3-4 - For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

3. 3Jo 1:8 - We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.

4. 2 Cor 4:2 - But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

5. Eph 4:14 - …that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ.

6. 1Th 2:13 - For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe …

7. Jam 5:19 - Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

E. b/c our enemy, the devil, is described as the exact opposite of the truth and actively seeks to counter the truth. He always has, and always will.

1. John 8:44 - “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.

When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

2. Rev. 20:2-3 - He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished.

How does he do this?

truth diluted.

Rom 2:20 - … an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.

truth disliked.

Gal 4:16 - Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

truth questioned.

John 18:38 - Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all

truth suppressed.

Rom 1:18 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

truth “replaced” (aka idolatry).

Rom 1:25 - who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen

truth ridiculed.

Act 26:25 - But he said, “I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak the words of truth and reason.

truth ignored.

Gal 5:7 - You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

F. Final question -

How do we worship in truth, walk in truth, and fight in truth?

1. Be true to Jesus.

Jdg 6:14 - Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?”

2. Be close to Jesus (truth is a fruit of sorts) through good and bad times.

Eph 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

3. Be true to yourself.

1Jo 4:5 - They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Which spirit most influences you tonight?

“The believer is guided into truth (John 16:13), to worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). Doing Christ’s word enables one to know the truth and so be free (John 8:32). This Christian freedom is not due to possession of correct knowledge but rather comes from relationship to that which is truly real, namely, God.”

SN - notes from 11/20/10

LOVE - TRUTH - AWARENESS - ACTION

a 4 part SN study

LOVE

I. GOD IS LOVE - 1 John 4:8

A. This is verified by the person of God in terms of His trinitarian nature - He exists in the form of a Loving Community of sorts

1. John 5:20 - For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.

2. John 14:30-31 - I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

3. Rom. 15:30 - Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me…

II. LOVE IS FROM GOD - 1 John 4:7

A. This verse verifies that God is the Designer and Originator of love - with out Him, there would be no love.

III. GOD LOVES US.

A. John 3:16 - For God so loved the World…

B. John 3:16 - For God so loved the World, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1. God’s fundamental definition/example of love implies action, not feeling - therefore, we can conclude that love was always meant to be an action, not a feeling.

a. His plan - action

From Gen. 3:15, to Abe, Isaac and the near sacrifice, to Psalm 22 and Isa. 53, to the new heaven and new earth of revelation - God has left an action packed, scarlet thread of love throughout the bible.

b. His incarnation - action

The fact He became flesh = love.

c. His teaching - action

The parable of the Good Samaritan; the 2 debtors/the woman who was forgiven much; 5 sparrows for 2 cents; the lost sheep from the 100;

d. His conversations - action

The restoration of Peter, Zaccheus, the woman caught in the adultery, eating with Matthew, the restoration of James (1 Cor. 15:7), etc.

e. His prayers - action

To protect Peter from Satan; From the cross - “Father forgive them for they no not what they do…”

f. His crucifixion and resurrection - action

propitiation -> imputation = salvation - all actions based on His love for us!

g. His intercession - action

He prays for us from the right hand of God

h. His leaving of the Holy Spirit - action

To guide, help, seal, and empower us to respond to all of His love - all actions

In the realm of science, there are physical principles that are constant - energy can not be created or destroyed; electricity cannot be created or destroyed; the products of a reaction must be equal to the reactants; etc. In the spiritual realm, God has put

a similar principle into effect when it comes to love - it is meant to evoke change and response.

IV. OUR RESPONSE TO THIS LOVE.

2 Cor. 5:14 - For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

A. On the whole…

1. Love is action, not feeling!

1 John 3:18 - Dear brothers, let us not love with word or tongue, but with action and in truth.

2. Put on love - action

Col. 3:14 - But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection (the premise in the preceding verse is b/c Christ forgave you).

3. Pursue love (as in make it your goal to be more loving) - action

1 Cor. 14:1 - Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts…

4. Increase in love - action

1 Thes. 3:12 - And may the Lord make you increase and mabound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you,

5. Continue in love - action

Hebrews 13:1 - Let brotherly love continue.

6. Encourage one another in love - action

Hebrews 10:24 - And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works

7. Practice real love - action

Romans 12:9 - Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

8. Love fervently - action

1 Peter 4:8 - And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

B. We are to love Jesus.

1. By obeying Him - action

1 John 5:3 - For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

2. By spending time with Him - action

1 Thes. 5:16 - Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

3. By continuing with Him - action

Matt. 6:11 - Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.

4. By making Him the main object of our affection - action.

Matt. 10:37 - He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

C. We are to love others.

1. A genuine love for others occurs naturally as we grow in our love for Jesus.

Gal 5:20 - For the fruit of the Spirit is love…

It works itself out as we:

a. Share our lives with others.

1Th 2:8 - So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

1Jo 3:16 - By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

b. Share our resources with others.

1Jo 3:17 - But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

Matt 25:35-37 - For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

V. OPPOSITION TO THIS LOVE

A. Idolatry – 1 John 2:15 - Loving the world

B. Hatred - 1 John 4:20 – Hating the people

C. Religion – Luke 11:42 – Forgetting the relationship

SN - notes from 10/30/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 10 - burial, rez, + ascension

Mark 15:42-47; Mark 16

review

While Jesus hung on the cross, the passer-bys, the chief priests, the soldiers, and the thieves all mocked Him and told Him to remove Himself from the cross and they would believe - it was the one thing He would not do in order save us.

v42 - Joseph was part of the council that brought Jesus to Pilate

observation 1 - he went from being silent when they initially turned Jesus in, to showing true boldness when the 11 disciples did not - trials bring out the best and worst in people, that’s God uses them!

observation 2 - what he had to offer was both unique and necessary b/c tombs such as these were very expensive. Do you have something unique to offer the Lord?

v43 - What was Joseph waiting for/what is the Kingdom of God?

“The Kingdom of God” is a dominant biblical theme (OT and NT), with several names and 3 main applications:

the names

Kingdom of God - (Matt. 6:33; Mark 1:14, 15) = “kingdom of Christ” (Matt. 13:41; 20:21) = “kingdom of Christ and of God” (Eph. 5:5) = “kingdom of David” (Mark 11:10) = “the kingdom” (Matt. 8:12; 13:19) = “kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 3:2)

the OT concept

Isaiah 9:7

Of the increase of His government and peace, there will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Daniel 2:44

And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

the 3 main applications -

All the following verses denote the same concept (Kingdom of God) in 3 different manifestations: (1) Christ’s rule on the earth (2) the future/spiritual realm of heaven (3) the subjects of this kingdom (the church) and their “love” and “works” that benefit the present and future

I. In the temporal sense, consider the following verses:

Mark 1:14-15 - Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Matt. 12:28 - But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Mark 9:1 - And He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.”

Romans 14:16-17 - Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

1 Cor. 4:20 - For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

Col. 4:10-11 - Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), and Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who are of the circumcision; they have proved to be a comfort to me.

2. In the eternal/future sense, consider the following verses:

1 Cor. 16:9 - Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived

1 Cor. 15:50 - Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.

Matt. 19:24 - Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Mark 9:47 - And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire…

Mark 14:25 - Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 7:28 - For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

Acts 14:21 - And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

Ephesians 5:5 - For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

3. Both temporal and future are correct -

The parable of the Growing Seed in Mark 4:26-29

The parable of the Mustard Seed in Mark 4:30-33

Acts 8:12 - But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized

Acts 28:23 - So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening.

Acts 28:31 - preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.

Rev. 12:10 - Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

So unlike Joseph, we no longer need to wait for the kingdom of God in a temporal sense - it arrived when Jesus died and was resurrected. We continue to preach the kingdom, live the kingdom, and wait for the eternal kingdom of God.

v44 - Pilate marveled b/c you usually took a longer time to die on the cross - the centurion would have seen many deaths by crucifixion, so it would’ve easy for him to confirm Jesus’ death.

v47 - interesting that a few women and a newly repentant council member are there with Jesus in the end - it’s not what you say or how you start, it’s how you finish that truly matters.

Chapter 16 - 1 year and 11 months later :)

v1a - when the sabbath had passed…

observation - this means that saturday was over and sunday had begun - this makes it the 3rd day since He was crucified on friday.

v1b - bought spices

observation - worship should always be original and never generic. Recall that Nicodemus had also bought 100 lbs. of spice in John 19:39 - they wanted to use their own “spice”.

v3 - who will roll the stone away?

observation - the practical thing they did was use their own money to buy spices to embalm Jesus, the supernatural thing they needed God to do was remove the rock - we often work with God in this same balance.

v5 - …they saw a young man…

observation - God likes to throw curve balls (like the Macedonian call in Acts 16) - be prepared for an adventure!

v6 - do not be alarmed, you seek Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen!

observation 1 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we know: GOD LOVES US: Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates His own love for us in this, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

observation 2 - observation 1 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have assurance of SALVATION - ‘If Christ has not been raised,…then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is in vain. … If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins’ (1 Cor. 15:14)

observation 3 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have a FOCAL POINT - ‘If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above … ’ (Col. 3:1).

observation 4 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have: POWER - Paul speaks of his desire to know Christ ‘and the power of his resurrection’ (Phil. 3:10)

Observation 5 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have: HOPE - 1 Cor. 16:15-19 - For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

Observation 6 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have: RELATIONSHIP - 1 Peter 3:18 - For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit…

and

But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.

Observation 7 - don’t be alarmed b/c now we have MISSION - Mark 16:15 - “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”

and that’s a wrap!

SN - notes from 10/23/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 9 - the death of Jesus

Mark 15:24-47

review from last week (on the way to the cross)

1. The carrier was a spectacle to all people - sinner and saved alike.

2. The carrier was to make it the destination - he was to continue. There was literally no turning back, no negotiation, no compromises, no other option.

3. The carrier knew the destination was death - but for the Christian, death is just a passage way to Jesus and glory.

2 Cor 5:21 - For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

v24 - the soldiers “played games” while God incarnate slowly died

observation 1 - What a backdrop! The soldiers were totally oblivious to what was happening (the most important event in human history - make sure there are no “games” in your life that supercede Jesus.

observation 2 - Luke 23:36-37 - “The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” - they are the 1st to tell Him to save Himself.

observation 3 - this fulfilled Psalm 22:18

v25 - John 19 points out that it was the 6th hour (noon), Mark says it was the 3rd hour (9 am) - it was most likely a copyist error

v26 - John tells us that the title was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin (b/c He was Lord of all), and that the Jews were offended at this title.

v27 - Mark (v32) and Matthew point out that the 2 thieves also ridiculed Jesus. One eventually repented b/c Luke mentions that one confessed his sin, and asked Jesus to “remember” him when “He comes into His kingdom”.

observation 1 - In Luke 24:39 - the one thief also asks Jesus to save Himself and them.

“If you are the Christ, save yourself and us”

observation 2 - This (v28) fulfilled Isaiah 53:9

v29-30 - the passerby’s also taunted Him, saying, “save Yourself, and come down from the cross”.

observation - this is the 3rd people group to tell Him to “save Himself”.

v31-32 - The chief priests and scribes ridicule Him in a similar manner.

observation - although blasphemous, their statement is profound - “He saved others: Himself He cannot save”

observation - This is the 4th people group to tell Him to “save Himself”

v32 - more mocking and zero compassion from these religious leaders

v33 - on the darkness over the land…

The remarkable darkness all over the earth showed the agony of creation itself in the Creator’s suffering. “Origen (Contra Celsus, ii,33) and Eusebius (Chron.) quote the writing of Phlegon (a Roman historian) in which he makes mention of an extraordinary solar

eclipse as well as of an earthquake about the time of the crucifixion.” (Geldenhuys)

Phlegon, Roman historian: “In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an extraordinary eclipse of the sun: at the sixth hour, the day turned into dark night, so that the stars in heaven were seen; and there was an earthquake.” (cited in Clarke)

v34 - Jesus 7 sayings from the cross:

1. Luke 23:14 - “Father forgive them for they do not know what they do”.

Jesus is forgiving

2. John 19:26-27 - “Woman behold your son. Then He said the disciple, behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her into His own home”

Jesus is compassionate and caring

3. Luke 23:43 - “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise”.

Jesus is gracious and hope inspiring

4. John 19:28 - “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst!’”

Jesus fulfills

5. Mark 15:34 - And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” Which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”.

Jesus (God) is Holy

6. Luke 23:46 - Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Jesus completes

7. John 19:30 - When He had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus paid it all (once for all).

1 Peter 3:18 - “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit…”

v34 - why and how did God forsake Him?

Since God is completely holy (Holy x3 in Isaiah 6), and our sin keeps us from relationship with Him, Jesus had to:

1. Take our sin (reconcile, expiate, propitiate, redeem, etc.) -

2 Corinthians 5:21 - Because God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him

a. this caused God to withdraw (forsook) from Jesus for the 1st time in eternity

b. this caused God (who is perfectly just) to pour out His judgment and wrath on Jesus instead of us

1 John 2:2 - And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

2. Give us His righteousness -

Romans 5:18 - Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men,

resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

v34-35 - they mis-heard Jesus and thought he said Elijah

observation - cults tend to form this same way :(

v37 - This is where He said, “It is finished”.

v38 - man now had access to the “most holy place”!

observation - notice, “from the top down”

v39 - the centurion believes

v40 - the women watch

observation - lots of Mary’s -

• Mary is the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:30-31)

• Mary of Bethany (John 11:1)

• Mary, the mother of James (not Jesus’ brother) Matthew 27:56)

• Mary, the wife of Clopas (John 19:25)

• Mary, the mother of John Mark (Acts 12:12)

Mary, the mother of John Mark (Acts 12:12)

• Another Mary mentioned in Romans 16:6

• Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2)

final thoughts -

1. The soldiers, the passer-bys, the thief, and the scribes and chief priests all asked Jesus to come off the cross - this was the one thing He could not/would not do to secure our salvation.

2. The fact that God is holy and that God is love (1 John 4:8) weigh heavily as to why He willingly died for us - He broke His relational existence to secure ours - surely that deserves our thankfulness and our affection forever.

Haiti needs part 2 - TOOLS

If you are able to, please send any of the following ASAP to CC Ft.
Mark 15:20-24

A. Getting Jesus wrong

Jesus has always evoked various responses in people:

v17 - some cloth Him in their own purple (color of royalty)- Jesus becomes deified but with much human baggage

v18 - some salute Him - Jesus becomes an object of mere allegiance

v19a - some struck Him - Jesus becomes hated and draws out major opposition

v19b - some spat on Him - Jesus becomes pitied and looked on as an elementary ideology

v20a - some mocked Him - Jesus becomes laughed at and looked at as a ridiculous fairy tale character

v20b - some attempt to take the purple off of Him - Jesus becomes severely marginalized and given boundaries in one’s life

v20c - some attempt to cloth Him in their own cloths (convolute Him) - Jesus becomes integrated into all sorts of cults and false ideals and religions

v20d - all crucified Him - all these false perceptions of Jesus have one common denominator - they require the cross to be made right.

With the cross, the cold salutes can become sincere prayers; the strikes can become embraces; the spitting can turn into crying; the mocking can turn into preaching; and the perfect royalty of Jesus remains unmodified by us.

B. Carrying the cross

Mar 8:34 - When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Mat 10:37-39 - “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

v21 - Simon was from Cyrene (Libya) in North Africa and most likely visiting for Pentecost. He was forced to help Jesus carry the cross to Calvary/Golgotha.

observation 1 - Calvary or Golgotha? Golgotha is the Aramaic word for skull, Calvary is derived from the latin word for skull, Calvaria.

observation 2 - Here we see the humanity of Jesus so clearly. He has: been beaten by temple guards, walked miles, not eaten or drank anything, been scourged, been beaten by Roman guards, and now is forced to carry a 100 lb. cross bar to his place of death.

observation 3 - often, the church also needs to compel one another to carry their own crosses. The best way to do this is to carry your own and follow Jesus - what does this mean?

1. The carrier was a spectacle to all people - sinner and saved alike.

Philippians 2:14-16 - Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the

universe as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

observation - apparently, this experience changed Simon and eventually his family -

Mark 15:21 - And they compelled, Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. - HE WRITES ABOUT HIS SONS LIKE THEY WERE KNOWN TO THE CHURCHES.

Rom 16:13 - Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine - PAUL LIKENS THE MOTHER TO HIS OWN.

2. The carrier was to make it the destination - he was to continue. There was literally no turning back, no negotiation, no compromises, no other option.

Acts 14:21-22 - And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith,

and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”

observation - this is sanctification personified

3. The carrier knew the destination was death - but for us, death is just a passage way to Jesus and glory.

Luke 23:43 - And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Gal. 6:14 - But God forbid that I should glory, save the cross of our Lord, by whom the world is crucified to me and I to the world.

B. Wine revisited

Interestingly, Jesus began life on earth with myrrh, made wine in His 1st miracle, and here He ends His ministry refusing both.

why?

myrrh at birth - Jesus saves

wine at the wedding - Jesus cares

no myrrh - Jesus completes

no wine - Jesus reigns

SN - notes from 10/9/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 7 - Jesus gets questioned

Mark 15:1-20

Just prior to His death, Jesus encounters 6 different people/types of people - Pilate, the religious leaders, the crowd, Barabbas, Herod, and the soldiers. The goal tonight is to learn something from each person’s interaction with Jesus.

Pilate

Pilate questions Jesus primarily 4 X:

1. Are you the king of the Jews? We question the sovereignty of God.

2. Do you answer nothing? We question the timing of God.

3. What is truth? We question the word/promises of God.

4. What do you want me to do with this Jesus of Nazareth? We fail to seek God to reveal the unique and personal plan God has for each of us.

The religious leaders

The Sadducees, Pharisees, Scribes, and chief priests were simply envious of Jesus.

Mar 15:10 - For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy

We become envious of what God might be doing in the lives of other people around us.

See Psalm 73

The crowd

Recall the ancient command and warning:

Exd 23:2 “You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.”

Proverbs 13:20

Whoever walks with the wise, becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm

The crowd was huge

Mark 2:4 - And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.

The crowd sought Jesus for a time

Luk 4:42 - Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them;

The crowd followed Jesus for a time

Luke 7:9 - When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”

The crowd was easily misled

Mar 15:11

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.

The crowd demanded the death of Jesus

Mark 15:12

Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”

So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”

But Jesus loves the crowd

Matt 9:36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

observation - regardless of how huge the crowd might be, if it doesn’t continue to seek and follow Jesus, it will soon trying to dictate His fate.

Herod

Luke 23:8 - When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.

Beware of seeking Jesus only in hopes He will do some miracle for you or give you something you want

the soldiers

Mark 15:19 - And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.

John 4:24 - God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Beware of not worshipping Jesus in Spirit and in Truth.

Barabbas -

His name means son of Abba or of a father - a notorious robber/rebel whom Pilate proposed to condemn to death instead of Jesus, whom he wished to release, in accordance with the Roman custom (John 18:40; Mark 15:7; Luke 23:19).

But the Jews were so bent on the death of Jesus that they demanded that Barabbas should be pardoned (Matt. 27:16–26; Acts 3:14).

Barabbas becomes a perfect example of why Jesus had to die - we are all guilty according to Romans 3:23 - and He needed to take our place - this alone makes it possible to be called a son of the Father”

SN - notes from 10/2/10 - the awakening conference 2010

Relational Evangelism

II. EXEMPLIFICATION (of relational evangelism) -

A. Jesus

1. His life was relational -

Luke 5:30-31 - And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Luke 7:34 - “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking and you say, ‘Look, a glutton, a winebibber, and a friend of tax collectors and sinners’ “

Luke 19:5-7 - When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.’ ”

2. His method of ministry was relational:

a. in His discipling of the 12 (they were not technically saved until John 20:22)

b. in His sending of the 12 disciples - Luke 9:1-6 - mission #1 involved staying in the house you were ministering (preaching and healing) to.

c. in His sending of the 70 - Luke 10:1-12 - mission #2 also involved remaining in one house and (not going from “house to house”) serving the household by healing and preaching.

3. His teaching was relational:

a. Mt. 22:36-40 - “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

4. His death was relational -

a. Luke 23:42-43 - Then he said to Jesus, ” Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus said to him, “assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise”.

5. His resurrection was relational -

a. John 21:12 - Jesus said to them, ‘come and eat breakfast’.

6. His ascension was relational -

a. Matthew 18:20 - “…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”.

B. The early church

1. Their main concept of ministry was relational

a. as a whole -

Acts 2:46-47 - So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

b. individually -

1 Thess. 2:8 -

So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Acts 14:1-3 - Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.

But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.”

II. Foundation (of relational evangelism) -

a. The only correct foundation we can have for evangelism of any sort is a right and rich relationship with Jesus. If this is not present, evangelism becomes:

1. legalistic

2. forced

3. argumentative

4. an area of pride

5. more about the sharer and less about the gospel

b. Our relationship with Jesus is integral for authentic, effective relational evangelism. We need it for proper evangelical motivation ——>

III. MOTIVATION (for relational evangelism)

A. Love

Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

B. Compassion

Mat 9:36 - But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

Mat 14:14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’

Mat 15:32 - Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

Mat 18:27 “Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.

Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’

Mat 20:34 - So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

Mar 1:41 - Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”

Mar 5:19 - However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you and how He has had compassion on you.

Mar 9:22 - “And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.

Luk 10:33 - “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.

Luk 15:20 - “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

C. Fear

Jude 22-23 - And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

IV. APPLICATION (for relational evangelism)

A. The foundation is our relationship with Jesus.

B. From this, we cultivate a love, compassion, and fear for the lost.

C. This mixture of love, compassion, and fear combines with our people skills, passions, gifts, calling, and location = relational evangelism.

D. Relational evangelism is broad - it’s foundation is a relationship with Jesus, its motivation is a love, compassion, and fear for the lost (regardless of how lost), it’s application can be:

1. service - Mark 6:37 - But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.”

2. apologetics - 1 Peter 3:15 - “…but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…”

3. testimony - Mark 9:25 - He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”

4. invitation - Mark 1:17 - “Then Jesus said to them, “Come follow Me and I will make you fishers of men”.

5. truth - 1 Cor. 6:19-20 - Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

our relationship with Jesus -> our love/compassion/fear for the lost -> relational evangelism = invitation/apologetics/service/truth/testimony

SN - notes from 9/25/10

The crucifixion of Jesus pt. 6 - Profiling Peter

Mark 14:66-72

I. The prelude:

A. The Request of Satan

Luke 22:31

observation 1 - of all the ways the devil could have “sifted” Peter, he focused on attacking his relationship with Jesus.

observation 2 - of all the ways the devil could have attacked Jesus, he focused on His relationship with the Father (worship me and I will give you all these kingdoms).

B. The Prayer of Jesus

Luke 22:32

C. The Grace of Jesus

Luke 22:32

Mark 14:28 - But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.

and

Luke 24:25 - The Lord has indeed risen again an appeared to Simon!

D. The Vow of Peter

Luke 22:33

E. The Prophecy of Jesus

Luke 22:34

II. The Denial Scenario

1 - v54 - Peter followed Him at a distance

observation 1 - in terms of relationship, we should never follow Jesus from a distance, but should walk closely to Him - our relationship with Him is the most important thing.

observation 2 - in terms of repentance - Peter has turned from running away, and returned to following Jesus. ”From a distance” is at least a start, and is better than going in the other direction away from Jesus.

Zec 1:3 - “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the LORD of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts.

Mal 3:7 - Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the LORD of hosts.

2 - v66 + 67 - Peter warms himself by the enemy’s fire

observation 1 - typically, this is used to show how we are not to find warmth with the enemies of God/world.

BUT

John 17:15 - I do not pray not that You should take them out of the world, but that You would keep them from the evil one.

John 17:18 - As You have sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

Luke 6:27 - But I say to you who hear, love you enemies, do good to those who hate you.

Luk 7:34 - The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

Luke 15:7 - I tell you that likewise there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 just persons who need no repentance.

Mt. 22:36-39 - “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

observation 2 - In our modern day context, I can think of no better place for Christians to be than sharing a fire with those who don’t know Jesus - share your hot dogs too :).

observation 3 - our compassion and love for the lost is what provides the best vehicle with which to share the gospel with them -

no love = no effect.

3 - v68 - denial #1

4 - v70 - denial #2

5 - v71 - denial #3 - with collateral damage

observation 1 - he cursed and swore (Mark)

observation 2 - He emphatically lied (Matthew and Luke)

observation 3 - He did both (cursed and lied) in front of Malchus’ relative - the one he had tried to kill in the garden.

observation 4 - so, Peter basically tried to murder the enemy, denied Jesus/lied to the enemy, cursed in front of the enemy, and did all of this in front of people who needed Jesus.

1 Cor. 15:34 - Awake to righteousness and do not sin for some do not have the knowledge of God.

Prov. 25:26 - The righteous man who falters before the wicked is like murky spring or a polluted well.

THE RESULTS

1. Satan succeeded in sifting Peter - his relationship with Jesus (denied x 3), and his relationship with the lost (attempted murder, lying, cursing) were ground to dust.

2. Peter succeeded in blowing it and weeps bitterly. Likely battling horrific condemnation.

3. Jesus restores lovingly. He had called it already! He wasn’t surprised!

John 21

v12 - come and dine = relationship restored

v15-18 -

Do you love me? x 3

Feed my lambs and sheep x 3

Follow me.

= motivation, effectiveness, and purpose restored

observation 1 - notice He didn’t ask if he was sorry, or make him promise not to blow it again, or make him get 1 million accountability partners (not that accountability isn’t important) - His questions focused on Peter’s love for Him.

observation 2 - this is where the devil will always focus his greatest attacks - your love and relationship with Jesus.

Acts 1:15 (to the 120 disciples), Acts 2:14 (to the soon to be converts), and Acts 10:9 (prayer to Jesus) = Peter is relational, restored, and reloaded.

1. be aware that the devil has aggressive and subtle plans to sabotage your relationship with Jesus.

2. be aware of your witness 24/7

3. be aware that Jesus loves you and wants your real (not fake) love too. He died to have it.

SN - notes from 9/18/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 5 - the betrayal and arrest

Mark 14:42-65

I. Be ready

v42 + 43 - now you see why He wanted them praying - it wasn’t just for Him.

observation - Jesus knew this would be their first real test of faith and perseverance - this is why He had some “watch and pray” and some “wait” while He prayed. The waiting periods and the prayer seasons help to cultivate resilience and perseverance.

v44 - “whomever I kiss…”

observation - amazing that this same physically unremarkable, incarnate God was the One that dwelled in unapproachable light eons before this time. Remarkable humility!

II. The humility of Jesus

Matt. 11:28+29 - Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

n. Submitting to sufferings. Isa 50:6; 53:7; Ac 8:32; Mt 26:37-39.

o. Exposing himself to reproach and contempt. Ps 22:6; 69:9; Ro 15:3; Isa 53:3.

p. Death. Joh 10:15,17,18; Php 2:8; Heb 12:2.

III. The results of His humility:

1. From the haters - Indignation - Mark 6:3 - Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and dbrother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.

2. For the believers - Salvation - Heb. 12:1+2 - Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set

before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3. From the Father - Exaltation Phil. 2:8+9 - Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under

earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

observation - so we see a reverse principle at work, temporal humility on earth leads to eternal glorification in heaven.

IV. Love Jesus?

v45 - Judas - he had been taught by Jesus, lived with Jesus, had seen the miracles, and was empowered by Jesus - however he simply loved money more … and was possessed by Satan.

v46+47 - Peter - similarly to Judas, he had left all to follow Jesus, had been empowered by Him, and had been taught by Him - however, at this point in time, He was impulsive and prayerless … and loved His own idea of the Messiah more than God’s.

observation 1 - this attack could have resulted in a capital punishment - so if Jesus hadn’t healed Malchus, there might have been a Messiah, 2 criminals, and 1 fisherman on Calvary.

observation 2 - as Christians, we do not serve the Lord by taking lives, but by giving up our own.

Rev. 12:11 - And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

v48 - the scribes, chief priests, and elders, along with the armed guards - had all heard Jesus teaching daily and even just saw another miracle - but their envy towards Him was blinding and they loved position and power more than anything else.

v49 - Jesus had a true scriptural tenacity - He loved us, His Father and the word - and obeyed the latter whole heartedly at all times.

v50- all 11 fled fulfilling Mark 14:27 - they loved their own lives more than His.

v51 - the guy in linen loved being naked more than Jesus - just kidding. This is most likely Mark. His house is mentioned in Acts 12:12 and it is quite likely the place the Last Supper was held. Judas would have went there 1st looking for Jesus, he

probably hopped out of bed in his linen pjs and raced to tell Jesus they were coming. However, his heroic antics stopped there.

V. The trial

v53-55 - Mark does not record the trial before Annas (John 18) - there were several actual trials:

Arrest - > Annas - > illegal “night court” of the Sanhedrin (in text) - > then to an “official” daylight trial of the Sanhedrin -> then to Pilate -> Herod -> Pilate -> cross.

v56-59 - He never said, “this temple made with hands” - just His reference to His body

v60 - Isaiah 53:7

v61-62 - Jesus’ reply indicates that He is the ultimate judge, not this high priest.

v63-65 - He is beaten, much inspired by the fact that this is a their “hour and the power of darkness” (Luke 22)

And so it begins, the Passion of the Christ to save people from their sins.

SN - notes from 9/11/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 4 - the prayer in the garden (B)

Mark 14:32-41

In our last study (The Prayer in the Garden - part A), we looked at the beginning of Jesus’ famous prayer and applied it in 2 different ways:

HTL - how to live

and

HTP - how to pray

to review:

HTL 1 = be still

HTL 2 = be aware (depression)

HTL 3 = be real in life

HTL 4 = be awake

HTP 1 = pray like a child

HTP 2 = pray real

HTP 3 = pray watchfully

HTP 4 = pray persistently

HTP 5 = pray flexibly

Tonight, our goal is to continue to learn from Jesus’ prayer in the garden, this time focusing on John’s take on it in John 17.

v1a - “The hour has come” - this profound verse applies to every human being great or small, young or old - you only have so much time on this earth. You either use the time wisely, or you squander it.

observation - His time had finally come! Others had tried to expedite it:

John 2:4 - Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”

John 7:8 - “You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.”

John 7:30 - Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

observation - live your life with an eternal mindset and do the good works God wired you for (Eph. 2:10). No one can sidetrack God’s plans for you unless He OKs it.

v1b - “Glorify your Son” - from a quick look at this, we can learn to:

1) pray personally

2) pray specifically

3)pray conversationally

v1b - “Glorify your Son” -

from a deeper look at this, we can see:

“Glorify…” = doxazomai - praise, to speak words of praise - Jesus wanted to please His Father. We are not simply obedient or wanting to bring glory to our earthly fathers in order to become their children, we are generally obedient because they love us and we love them.

#1 - This love relationship is foundational to how we act toward them whether good or bad.

#2 - Basically, worldliness seeks to glorify self and others, godliness seeks to glorify God alone.

In terms of our heavenly Father, we can glorify Him for His:

a. Holiness - Ps 99:9; Re 15:4.

Ps. 99:9 - Exalt the Lord our God,

And worship at His holy hill;

For the Lord our God is holy.

b. Mercy and truth - Ps 115:1; Ro 15:9.

Ps. 115:1 - Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,

But to Your name give glory,

Because of Your mercy,

Because of Your truth.

Rom. 15:9 - “…and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written:

For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles,

And sing to Your name.”

c. Faithfulness and truth - Isa. 25:1.

Isa. 25:1 - O Lord, You are my God.

I will exalt You,

I will praise Your name,

For You have done wonderful things;

Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

d. Judgments - Rev. 14:7

Rev. 14:7 - “… saying with a loud voice, ’Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

e. Grace - Acts 11:18

Acts 11:18 - When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”

f. In all things - 1 Cor. 10:31

1 Cor. 10:31 - Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

So, we clearly see that Jesus sought to bring glory to His Father, and lived His life accordingly. What were some His God-glorifying objectives?

In the big picture, “The Son glorified the Father by revealing in the act the sovereignty of God over evil, the compassion of God for men, and the finality of redemption for believers.” (Tenney)

Specifically -

1) v2 - to give eternal life

2) v3 - to make it possible for people to “know” God (through His death), and to get people to want to “know” God (through His life).

observation - eternal life is defined here by “knowing” (ginosko = experiential knowledge) Jesus. If one doesn’t know Jesus, their life is dead and temporal.

3) v4 - to finish the work

observation - our goal is to finish strong as well.

Phil. 3:13 -14 - Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Heb. 12:1-2 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

4) v4 - to be glorified with God (again in His case)

Col. 3:2 - Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

5) v6 - To manifest (reveal) His name to the 12

observation - ‘Manifest’ means He lived and displayed the name of God - He did not just talk or teach about it. If our Christianity is to have impact, we must do the same.

6) v9 - “I pray for them” - to pray for the 11. It was the 11 who would reach the world, so He focused His prayer on them.

Rom. 8:34 - Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

a. v11a - He prayed they would be “kept” = tereo = guarded/protected

b. v11b - He prayed they would be “one” - unity x 1

c. v12 - He prayed for them to have His joy fulfilled

d. v15 - He prayed they would be in the world, but protected from the prince of this world.

e. v17 - He prayed for their sanctification - they (and we) continue the process via the word

f.v20 - He prayed for future believers

g. v21 - He prayed for unity x 2

h. v22-23 - He prayed for unity x 3

why? v23 - “that the world may know” that God sent Jesus.

i. v24 - He prayed that they would be with Him in heaven one day - a promise of togetherness forever beyond this life alone.

j. v26 - He prayed “love” would be in them

conclusions -

Based on this last prayer, Jesus seemed most concerned about:

1. our protection

2. our unity x 3

3. our joy

4. our presence in the world

5. our sanctification

6. our present time with Him

7. our future time with Him

8. our love

SN - notes from 8/28/10

The Crucifixion of Jesus pt. 3 - the prayer in the garden (A)

Mark 14:32-41

review - part 2 of our series focused on Jesus’ words as He and the 12 walked to the garden. We noticed how He stressed the importance of His relationship to the Father and their relationship to Him. In sum:

Any effective, real expression of our faith in Jesus (works, obedience, love, fruit, etc.) must be hinged to our relationship with Jesus - without relationship, things become forced, contrived, and quickly get weird.

Tonight we will be taking a look at Jesus’ prayer in the garden both in terms of practice (as in how to pray - HTP) and content (as in how to live - HTL).

Next week we will do the same thing, but use John 17 as our reference point.

I. Prior to His prayer

How To Live (HTL) #1 - “Sit here while I pray” - in Ps. 46:10, we are told to “be still” knowing that “He is God” -

be still = rephah = to let hang, to be weak

this is easier to do when you compare Ps. 46 with the thought that He still takes time to pray for you - you matter that much to Him, and that is often an easy thing to forget.

HTL #2 - “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful - part 1”… - Jesus became depressed, until heaven, you will too. Recognize it as either biological or spiritual, and attack either (especially the latter) with prayer, fellowship, and the promises of God.

It is not a sin to seek medical help for the former. Is it a sin to use prosthetics for missing limbs?

HTL #3 - “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful - part 2”…

- Jesus was real in how He lived and about the things he was going through - here, we see that He had people in His life to talk with and pray with. Be real in your conversation and seek friendships that actually spur you on..

HTL #4 - “Stay here and watch” - we are always to be aware and awake for our sakes and others (in a non-nosey way) remembering that the devil is always roaming. The is command to take watch will have specific locations and seasons - there’s was the garden for a short period of time.

Rom 13:11 - And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.

1Cr 15:34 - Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak [this] to your shame.

Eph 5:14 Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”

II. During His prayer (in Matt. 26, Mark 14, and Luke 22)

How To Pray (HTP) #1 - “Abba” - Jesus uses this title when teaching the 12 how to pray, 3X in His prayer for crucifixion alternatives, and 4X in His prayer for the 12 and the future church. Recognize you are praying to a limitless (all things are possible for You) loving “dad”.

HTP #2 - “Take this cup and away from me” - Jesus was real in how He prayed - He prayed His fears. Be real in your prayer life.

HTP #3 - “Watch and pray” - one key to avoiding temptation is to have a prayer life that is not static, but that is alive and flowing based on what you are “watching” in life.

“Watch and pray” is also used in the context of eschatology:

Mark 13:33 - “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.

Luke 21:36 - “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

HTP #4 - “again He went away and prayed” - Jesus was constant in His prayers and prayer life. Pray with persistency.

Luke 18:1-8 - The parable of the persistent widow.

Luke 11:5-8 - The parable of the persistent friend.

Matt. 7:7 - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

HTP #5 - Matt. 26:39 - “…nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus put the will of the Father over His own will and desire. Pray with flexibility recognizing God is sovereign and He seems to like to use “audibles”.

HTL 1 = be still

HTL 2 = be aware (depression)

HTL 3 = be real in life

HTL 4 = be awake

HTP 1 = pray like a child

HTP 2 = pray real

HTP 3 = pray watchfully

HTP 4 = pray persistently

HTP 5 = pray with flexibility
