1/2/10 notes - Jesus and hell.
SN-1/2/10
Jesus and hell
1. remember the context is Jesus responding to the disciple’s argument on
who the greatest would be in the coming Kingdom. There are also children
around Jesus, so their presence is also to be noted.
2. (v42) - the importance of not causing little ones to stumble.
stumble = skandalizo - to offend, to cause to fall
most likely this refers to the 12’s argument about greatness - aka pride of life
The idea is major - it would be better to just die, than to bring others down in
in terms of their faith
3. (v43) The hand (aka - the flesh) - not referring to mutilation
see Lev. 19:28 - refers to what you touch
4. life (heaven) vs. hell
on heaven -
a. An everlasting place.
Ps 89:29; 2Co 5:1.
b. An Immeasurable place.
Jer 31:37.
c. A holy place.
Deut. 26:15; Ps 20:6; Isa 57:15.
d. A place of reward.
Mt 5:12; 1Pe 1:4.
e. A place of happiness.
Re 7:16,17
f. A place of rest.
Heb 4:9.
on hell -
a. A place of torment.
Lu 16:23.
b. a place w/o the presence of God.
2Th 1:9.
c. A place of everlasting punishment.
Mt 25:46.
d. a place of everlasting fire. Mt 25:41.
e. A place meant for the devil.
Mt 25:41.
f. a place to avoid at all costs.
Pr 15:24.
5. (v44) - the worm and the fire (inside torment/outside torment)
6. (v45) - the foot (aka - the flesh) - refers to where you go
7. (v47) - the eye (aka - the lust of the eyes) - refers to what you see
8. (v48) on salt and fire
a. everyone - in context, every believer.
b. in Lev. 2:13, all sacrifices were required to be burned and salted
Malachi 3:2 - But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall
stand when he appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire, and like a launderer soap:
He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi,
And purge them as gold and silver, That they may offer to the LORD an
offering in righteousness.
So it makes sense scripturally that if we are to be used to raise
others and rescue them (see Pr 23:14; Jude 1:23) and NOT
to stumble them, then God will take us through the fires to refine and purify us.
9. (v49) - And, we are to stay salty (see Matt. 5:13) - we are to maintain our
saltiness so we can bless and build others up.
10. (v.50) - Have peace with one another (see 1 Thess. 5:13) - ties it all up
based on their initial argument.
Conclusions/Applications
1. don’t go to hell.
2. do go to heaven
3. don’t stumble others with your actions - repent if you have.
4. do be in the word - it braces you for those beneficial fires
5. do be Spirit filled - you will personify saltiness to the world.
6. As a body (SN), let’s do some salty things together.
